The West-Flanders region offers an ideal mix of nature and culture. It is one of those unique places where you can enjoy silence along canals and open landscapes, but culture is never far away.
Along the tour, you of course discover the story of the first World War in the towns of Ieper ( Ypres ) and Diksmuide. The most interesting town of this tour is of course Bruges, the famous historic town with its wonderful cultural heritage and many canals which has earned the city the surname ‘Venice of the North’. You spend three nights in this wonderful city as a base to explore the area around.

After arriving in Roeselare you can start with a small tour to the basilica of Dadizele and discover the scenary around the city. There is plenty to see in Roeselare, with the National Cycling Museum, the brewery of Rodenbach, the old cemetery, the city park along the Mandel river and the Castle of Rumbeke with various exhibitions . A city centre known for its vibrating shopping streets.
Day 2
Roeselare ~ Ieper / Ypres (31 km)
Your first cycling tour will take you to Ieper ( Ypres ), a beautiful medieval town with a stunning market place and the famous town-gate ‘Menenpoort’. The route itself is a wonderful experience through rolling, charming hills. You pass the Tyne Cot cemetery, the largest graveyard for English soldiers of World War I and you can visit the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum’. In Iepre you can walk around the city following the ramparts route.
Day 3
Leper ~ Diksmuide (45 / 60 kms)
Today passes another nice medieval town: Poperinge, popular for the hops cultivated in this area. The ‘Talbot House’ is a place of interest, it was the only place during WWI where British soldiers could rest and forget about the war for a while. Definitely worth a visit is the Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus where the Westvleteren is brewed, voted the best beer in the world! You cycle further along the banks of the IJzer to Diksmuide, where the IJzertoren, a well-known monument of the Great War can be visited. You can also enjoy the beauty of the historic market place of this town.
Day 4

It is almost unbelievable how much cultural heritage can be discovered in such a rural region. Indeed, the destination is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Bruges, with its historic centre and the stunning belfry.
Day 5
Bruges ~ Knokke ~ Bruges (59 km)
Todays cycle will take you along the area between Bruges and Knokke, a village of the Belgian coast. It will undoubtedly be a lovely ride through the polder landscapes and the dunes. Day 6
Bruges ~ De Haan ~ Bruges 52 km

We had a very nice holiday. The bikes were good quality and worked well, The locks were very good. The accommodation was good, though as it was very hot air conditioning would have been a bonus. The breakfasts were excellent overall, The Velotel was a lovely hotel, we ate at the restaurant the three night, excellent quality food and friendly staff. Bruge is a lovely city, though very crowded. It was a nice tour and distances about right. The map and directions minimised losing the way.
