Tour

Germany - Bavarian Beer Tour

Germany - Bavarian Beer Tour

Degree of difficulty - B

On the beer tour through romantic Franconia, discover and taste a real brewing tradition. You cycle through Aischtal valley, which has an average of one brewery per kilometre, making it the area with the greatest number of breweries in the world. You will get to know the medieval towns of Nuremberg, Bamberg and Rothenburg. The „Burgenstraße“ (castle road) cycle path is a suitable backdrop for your tour. With numerous castles along the way this is a tour for lovers of brewing and castles!
Hilly sections with many small inclines, usually on quiet farm roads and side roads, not much of the route is along forest or field paths. A basic level of fitness is recommended.

Tour start either from Rothenburg ob der Tauber or from Nuremberg possible!

Day 1: Arrival in Rothenburg
Rothenburg is the epitome of German Romanticism and a perfect medieval town. After checking in to your accommodation you can take a stroll through the old town guided by the night watchman and learn all kinds of interesting fact about life in Rothenburg back in the day.

Day 2: Rothenburg – Wolframs-Eschenbach approx. 60 km
You leave the romantic Taubertal valley and follow the „Burgenstraße“ cycle path. In Colmberg, the mighty Zollernburg castle is overlooking the town. From here you follow the FranconianRezat to Ansbach, a splendid margrave residential town. You keep following the Burgenstraße to Wolframs-Eschenbach. There’s a lot to see in this medieval town!

Day 3: Wolframs-Eschenbach – Roth – Nuremberg approx. 60 km
Today you follow the Burgenstraße cycle path again, passingthe moated castle in Lichtenau, and reaching Roth. Visit Rati bor castle before you follow the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg. The castle, which has accommodated numerous emperors and kings, overlooks the imperial city majesti cally.

Day 4: Nuremberg – Forchheim – Rabenstein castle (Ahorntal valley)
approx. 50 km + train ride (not incl.) or approx. 95 km
If you want to take some more ti me wandering through Nuremberg in the morning, we recommend shortening today's stage with a train ride to Forchheim. If you prefer cycling to Forchheim, today's stage will be quite demanding. Again you follow the Burgenstraße cycle path, which leads you to today's destination, Rabenstein castle. There are quite some inclines and descents today. But it is worth the effort! Beautiful landscapes and numerous castles along the way makes today's stage very diversified. An impressive building welcomes you at today's desti nati on: Rabensteincastle.

Day 5: Rabenstein castle (Ahorntal valley) – Bamberg approx. 50 km
Just a few kilometres after your start you will reach a record breaking town: Aufseß. You think that it's just a small town but it has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. You are now in the town with the most breweries per resident! Before you continue today's bike tour to Bamberg, you should take a break here and try some of the beer.

Day 6: Sightseeing in Bamberg
In Bamberg there are numerous sights that shouldn't be missed. Visit the imperial cathedral and wander through the beautiful old town with its town hall, being located on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz river. A guided tour through one of the many local breweries is also very interesting, as well as visiting the brewery museum.

Day 7: Bamberg – Höchstadt – Neustadt an der Aisch,
approx. 55 km + train ride (not incl.) or approx. 70 km
First you cycle a few kilometres back along the path from yesterday. If you want to shorten today's section, you can take the train to Hirschaid (not included in price). Now follow the valley of the little river Aisch to Neustadt, where a billy goat makes an appearance every hour on the town hall clock.

Day 8: Neustadt – Bad Windsheim – Rothenburg approx. 60 km
In Bad Windsheim, take a break to visit the Franconian open air museum. Historic buildings have been rebuilt here and in the pub and in several beer gardens you can taste the locally brewed beer. If you still have a little room for a desert in the evening in Rothenburg, (aside from the obligatory beer), you should definitely try a Rothenburg snowball.

Note: Tour start either from Rothenburg ob der Tauber or from Nuremberg possible!

Day 9: Individual journey home or extension of your stay
After breakfast your cycling tour comes to an end.
